This is a large collection of papers relating to the Bagwell family of Tipperary. It relates entirely to estate matters from the 17th century Butler Ormonde interest to the end of the 20th century when the Bagwell connection with Clonmel finally ended.
The Bagwell home, Marlfield, was burned during the Civil War and many personal papers were lost. The collection deals with the getting and letting of property, mainly house property in Clonmel. Prior to the 20th century the collection is mainly leases. The 20th century part is comprised of legal documents and related correspondence with tenants, lawyers, accountants and Bagwell family members.
With one exception, the collection deals exclusively with Clonmel property. This exception is a map showing the Iffa & Offa West estate with the tenants’ holdings in manuscript together with a separate listing of tenants.
The collection provides a unique perspective on the urban development of Tipperary's largest town; Clonmel.
