A collection of GAA scrapbooks put together by Sam Melbourne over a forty year period.
This scrapbook collection was put together by Sam Melbourne over a period of forty years. Born in 1923 at Curraheen, Horse & Jockey, Co. Tipperary, Sam died in Dublin on August 11, 2013 in his ninety-first year
An avid collector of all GAA material Sam started keeping scrapbooks in the 1940’s and continued into the 1990’s with the main emphasis on the fifties, sixties and seventies. During this period he cut texts and pictures from every newspaper, national and provincial and painstakingly pasted them into bound volumes. The collection includes a sprinkling of memorabilia from other sports as well as Gaelic games, and also pictures of contemporary personalities in other walks of life and of the showbands that filled the ballrooms of romance between the fifties and the eighties.
The 37 volumes don’t appear to have a clear chronology and very few of the cuttings are dated. However they contain a wealth of material for the GAA researcher or enthusiast.
37 volumes, some very large.
