Thompson, Sam (1916-1965)

Biography/History

Sam Thompson (1916-1965) was a playwright born in Belfast. He workered as a painter in the ship-yard and was encouraged to write by Sam Hanna Bell. His best known play was "Over the Bridge" which dealt with a sectarian labour dispute. His work is known for its social realism. He was keen to acknowledge the sectarian divisions in Ulster society.
