Biography/History

James Alexander, the second son of Alderman Nathaniel Alexander of Londonderry, was the effective founder of the Alexander/Caledon family, and certainly the founder of its fortune. He arrived at Fort St George, Madras, in 1752, at the age of twenty-three, and became a factor there. Working in the East India Company in various locations, he amassed a fortune, left India in 1772 and bought Caledon in 1776 from the 7th Earl of Cork and Orrery for £96,400.
