Ferguson, Samuel, Sir (1810-1889)

Biography/History

Sir Samuel Ferguson, (1810-1889) was educated at Belfast Academical Institution and later at Trinity College Dublin. He left Trinity before graduation due to his father's dwindling finances. He later financed his legal education by writing. He contributed regularly to Blackwood's Magazine, Dublin University Magaine and a number of others. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1838. He continued to publish regularly. Ferguson was Keeper of Dublin records in 1867, elected Vice-President of the Royal Irish Academy and Chairman of the Manuscripts Committee in 1876 and President of the RIA in 1882. He was knighted in 1878.
