Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich (1923-1990) was born in Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh He was ordained in 1947 and had a distinguished early career as an academic. He was awarded the Licentiate in Historical Science with the highest distinction from the University of Louvain, and then appointed to the position of Professor of Modern Irish History at Maynooth at the age of 36. The Cardinal was committed to making knowledge of history and Irish culture more accessible to ordinary people, and he gave many lectures and addresses and published widely to further these aims. He was always careful to maintain a balance between academic and local interest. He was President of St. Patrick's College, Maynooth when appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1977, and was then appointed Cardinal in 1979. He died in May 1990 during the annual Armagh Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes.
