This collection was purchased by the Oireachtas Library in 1923 at an auction for the FitzGerald estate at Corrigan, Co. Clare.
The collection contains a large amount of literature, opera, poetry and plays. There is also a large body of work regarding the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714) and some general histories of Irish cities, European countries and important monarchs. There are several items relating to the ‘Surplus Revenues Dispute’ of the mid-18th century which are quite historically important. The general body of the library seems to be general historical and political interest, with a number of Commons Journals and sundry items from the mid 18th century making up the most striking aspects of the collection. Study of the selection of general history and political philosophy books provides a window into 18th and 19th century Irish ruling class interest, with subjects ranging from St Patrick to Catherine the Great.
